In 2007, I wrote lyrics to a set of beautiful songs written by Marco Spatuzzi for the group MEMORIA. The songs were inspired by the movie Blade Runner. Blade Runner is one of the most popular and influential science-fiction films of all time - and it has become an enduring cult classic favorite. It was directed by Ridley Scott and stars Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, and Sean Young. The screenplay, written by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples, is loosely based on the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick.
With our music and lyrics, we tried capturing the essence of the film. Twenty-five songs in total were written for this project.
MEMORIA'S Blade Runner: The Rock Project
Music inspired by the movie Blade Runner.
Below are a few of the songs from this project.
Merchants of Souls is performed during the scene where Deckard weaves through the crowds of people at Animoid row with what he believes is a fish scale.
This is the only song that does not describe the feelings or thoughts of one of the characters in the movie. This one paints the scene of Animoid row, a section of the city where merchants sell artificial animals.
Merchants of Souls
Their transient shadows entice
Darken souls like thieves in the night
The merchants have you in their sights
You can't resist
Prey victim
Caught in webs of deceit
Pandemonium
Runs rampant through the streets
Here the merchant lures
By selling their brands of reality
Remedies that cure all cursed
They'll seize control
With one last kiss to humanity
Before they capture your soul
The merchant lures
They'll sell you their brands of reality
Remedies that cure all cursed
They'll seize control
With one last kiss to humanity
Before they capture your soul
Prey victim
Caught in their webs of deceit
Pandemonium
Runs rampant through the streets
I Make Friends is sung from the perspective of Pris -- telling J.F. Sebastian how much they have in common.
I Make Friends
I knew that you’d find me
Just a matter of time
Before you’d rescue me
When you saw me there
You knew what to do
Only one who’d care
I can count on you
You are my savior
Took me in
Lent a hand
My new friend
Just as planned
We made friends
We’ve a lot in common
You make friends
Someone to rely on
I make friends
I was made to love you
‘Til I die
My Mind Lies was inspired by the last scene of the movie Blade Runner when Deckard walks into the room where Rachel lies asleep. It is sung from the perspective of Deckard. He is expressing his feelings to Rachael.
My Mind Lies
Memories
Remnants of a moment seeded in our minds
Weave themselves into the tapestry of life
Affecting our decisions. Defying time
Lost between the dream and reality
I don't know.
How different would it be if memories weren't real
Would we really know what to believe
Aren't they just as vulnerable as you and me
Lost between today and tomorrow
Can you tell me...
Do we dream our own dreams
Or maybe they're someone else's
Or some grand illusion
Don't know how we'd tell
Through this door, there lies a better life
Away from all that we know
Away from all this madness
We'll make our own memories
And if they're not real
If... my mind lies
Well then...
My mind lies
If my mind lies, my mind lies
If my mind lies, my mind lies
If my mind lies, my mind lies
If my mind lies, my mind lies...
This set of lyrics was written right after I got through with the Blade Runner Rock project. I wrote it to a song written by Paul Dubrovsky. It is a song about forgiveness. It's a lovely tune. Music composed, performed, and arranged by Paul Dubrovsky. Many thanks to Paul for this opportunity to work with him. I do hope to re-record and arrange this song under my production in the future. Below, I include the complete set of lyrics written for this. My arrangement of his song differed from his, as I was only given the chorus and main verse of this song to work with.
Heart & Soul
Another day has ended – I’m alone
I’ve never felt so empty – or so cold
I miss you more than ever – close to me
You’re all I am – you are my everything.
My heart and soul
My strength and hope
My joy – my world
If only you were here to hold
You never meant to hurt me – now I know
Forgiving you came easy – just let it go
This time apart has made me realize
How much you mean to me – you’re my life
My heart and soul
My strength and hope
My joy – my world
If only you were here to hold
Your heart – and soul
Your smile – and warmth
Your eyes – your touch
I never loved someone so much
So take my hand
I’ll show you just how much I care
Awake – my world
You are the only one
My heart and soul
